The League of Students of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty at the Polytechnic University of Timisoara and the Atelier de Urbanism of the Timisoara City Hall would like to invite you to participate in an environmental and city planning workshop in Timisoara, Romania from 17 November to 23 November.  The City Environment Workshop will provide a unique opportunity for students and young professionals from all over Europe who are interested in cities and the environment to have a chance to shape environmental and urban policy in one of the fastest-growing, most dynamic cities in Romania.  Over the course of the workshop, participants will produce an environmental plan relating to an environmental issue currently facing Timisoara.  This plan will be included in the two major policy documents currently being formulated to guide future development in and around Timisoara: the General Urban Plan (PUG) and the Regional Master Plan for the Timisoara Metropolitan Area.  Participants will use their prior knowledge, as well as information presented during the event in presentations and working sessions, to formulate the plan.

It is particularly fitting that young people should play an active role in shaping Timisoara’s future.  Timisoara, a city of about half a million people in the western part of Romania, is at a crossroads in its urban and environmental development.  Although it has not overcome all of the challenges it faces as a post-communist city, Timisoara is changing rapidly, demonstrating the dynamism of its economy and its people.  At the same time, city planners in Timisoara must ensure that these changes improve the environmental conditions in Timisoara, rather than damaging them further.  This is where young people must play an integral role in the planning process.  The organizers of this workshop believe that the participation of young people, who have the greatest stake in a healthy environmental future, is crucial to successful planning for the future of Timisoara.  By participating in this event, young people from all over Europe will serve as a positive example for how cities can include their citizens in building a better future.

The City Environment Workshop will have two parts.  In the first part, held in Timisoara from 17 November to 21 November, participants will produce the environmental plan described above, through a series of workshops, presentations, and free work time.  Opportunities will also be provided for socializing, including a welcome party and a pool party.  So please bring your swimsuit!  From 21 November to 23 November, all the event participants will be treated to a weekend retreat in the beautiful mountains near Timisoara, with lodging provided in an alpine cabana.

If you are interested in participating in the City Environment Workshop, please submit your CV and a short letter of interest (less than one page) using the tools on this page.  Lodging and food will be covered by the event organizers; you only will need to get yourself to Timisoara on 17 November and back home at the end of the conference.  We look forward to seeing you in Timisoara on 17 November!
